Greenville Balloon Festival

Don brings together two events to celebrate the First Great Northern Catskills Balloon Festival held in Greenville, New York. This painting was used on the August, 1998 cover of The Guide magazine. In 1783 a duck, rooster and sheep were sent aloft 3000 feet over Paris, France in the maiden voyage of the first hot air balloon with passengers. 1783 also dates the birth of Washington Irving, the author who wrote the legend of Rip Van Winkle. The classic tells the story of Rip's twenty-year sleep and his meeting with Henry Hudson and his crew from the Half Moone who according to folklore return to the Catskill Mountains every twenty years.
